Surf lifesavers are Australian for life. You can be too.

A surf lifesaver is a trained volunteer that patrols our beaches on the weekends. They undertake a number of roles including aquatic rescues, providing first aid and emergency care and provide surf safety information to the public.

Becoming a surf lifesaver is satisfying, fun and rewarding. You can lead a fit and healthy lifestyle, become trained in aquatic safety skills, make new mates, compete in surf sports, and give something back to your local community. You may also help save someone’s life one day.

What’s involved?

To become a surf lifesaver you need to join a club and obtain your Bronze Medallion training qualification. To obtain this you must be over the age of 15 and demonstrate proficiency in surf awareness, survival, patrol and rescue procedures, emergency care plus anatomy and physiology.

Once you’ve successfully completed this you will be allocated your patrol hours, you will be wearing the red and yellow, and can proudly call yourself a surf lifesaver.

If you’re not interested in performing aquatic rescues as a surf lifesaver, but still interested in volunteering your time on the beach, you can join up and help in other ways.

You could learn new skills and complete qualifications in first aid or radio operations to help on beach patrols. You could even help out with administration, fundraising or the weekend barbeque. The possibilities are endless.

How do I sign up?

Surf Life Saving is an inclusive organisation that offers something for everyone. We want all Australians to live an active life, to get involved in life, to participate, and to help save life.

Becoming part of Surf Life Saving means embracing the Australian way of life, meeting great people and getting involved – it means being Australian for life.

Surf Life Saving is an active part of Australian local communities. A place to belong, a place for everyone, a place to grow and be safe. But Surf Life Saving couldn’t save lives without volunteers.
